Join us at a significant Boise history location as Statesman columnist Dan Popkey, Associate State Librarian Marj Hooper, and Boise Mayor David Bieter officially kickoff our two month celebration of Boise and Idaho literature.

Feb 5-March 3--Whatchagot Stew Recipes from the Book to Your Plate                           Life's Kitchen Lunch Cafe
Life’s Kitchen will be serving up recipes from Patrick McManus’ book Whatchagot Stew: A Memoir of an Idaho Childhood, With Recipes and Commentaries. The dishes will be offered during normal business hours, Tuesday through Friday, from 11:30am to 1:00pm. Highlighted dishes include Southern Idaho Basque Soup, Skookum Minestrone Soup, Stuffed Cabbage Rolls, Spaghetti in Clam Sauce, Salmon Quiche, and Beef Stroganoff. The community is invited to the Lunch Café to experience the cuisine that inspired Patrick McManus to write his book, and to celebrate “Read Me Treasure Valley.” The menu selections will run in the Life’s Kitchen Lunch Café February 5 through May 3. Join us for a lively book discussion of Chris Crutcher’s hilarious, bittersweet and brutally honest story of his journey from a boyhood misspent in Cascade, Idaho, to his present life as a writer of young adult novels.

refuge as a mountain man, but must first learn to survive the harsh conditions and the ways of the Crow and Blackfoot Indians.

This program is made possible by funding from the Idaho Humanities Council, the state affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities.

Boise Poetry Night: Enjoy just a small showcase of Boise's very large and thriving poetry community brought to you by The Cabin. Featured readers include Boise Poet Laureate Diane Raptosh, BSU Professor and publisher Janet Holmes, BSU Instructor and Writers in the Schools teaching-writer Adrian Kien, Writers in the Schools teaching-writer Danny Stewart, and Ghosts and Projectors curator Megan Williams. Whitewater veteran and 2012 National Outdoor Book Award winning author, Jo Deurbrouck, will present on outdoor recreating in Idaho including notes from Anything Worth Doing: A true story of adventure, friendship and tragedy on the last of the West's great rivers.

Mar 8    7 PM--An Evening With Chris Crutcher, King of the Mild Frontier                                 Egyptian Theater
Author Chris Crutcher’s critically acclaimed and often controversial novels are recognized for addressing many problems adolescents deal with today.   The award-winning author, educator, and mental health specialist grew up in Cascade, Idaho and shares stories from his own Idaho childhood in King of the Mild Frontier: an ill-advised autobiography.

The Cabin and Read Me Treasure Valley would like to invite you to The Ides of March Annual Gathering. At this free event for local book clubs and friends, we will enjoy excerpts from Whatchagot Stew: A Memoir of an Idaho Childhood, with Recipes and Commentaries, by Patrick McManus, and encourage participants to add a tidbit to the stew. Please bring a short memory recipe of your own -- perhaps the craziest food you ever ate or a favorite food your mom or grandma cooked that reminds you of a special occasion -- it will make it an extraordinary evening. In addition, the free 2013 Ides of March Pamphlet containing the reading lists from twenty area book clubs will be released. Make sure to pick one up at the event and see what everyone is reading!

A Workshop with Susan Swetnam                                                                            Boise Public Library Main-Hayes
Learn the basics of technique including how to conceive and focus a project, how to identify interviewees, how to frame questions, and how to conduct an interview that encourages interviewees to open up.  We’ll also discuss the ethics of oral history, effective use of technology, and things one can do with the information gathered.  Registration recommended but not required.  Call 384-4076 to register.

Mar 18  7 PM --Mailboats of Hells Canyon  with Carole Simon-Smolinski                 Yanke Family Research Park
Discussion about the Snake River mailboats from the late 1910s that went from Lewiston to Johnson Bar and became the lifeline for miners, homesteaders and ranchers who lived there.  Learn  more about the boats, their intrepid captains, and the homesteader experience as captured in Grace Jordan’s Home Below Hells Canyon.

Don’t miss this special opportunity to hear Basque music, followed by a presentation by John Bieter. The co-author of An Enduring Legacy: the story of Basques in Idaho, examines three generations of Basques, each with a different perspective to their culture and a different experience in Idaho.

All ages are invited to a celebration of our historic Boise Depot with stories and memoirs of traveling to Boise using all means of transportation.  Facilitated by Barbara Martin-Sparrow.
 
Mar 27  7 PM-- Gary Eller  presents Bad Asses and Disasters of Early Idaho                             Boise Sesqui-Shop 
“Idaho” songs have not been found for notorious early people such as gambler Cherokee Bob, wild places such as Copperfield in Hells Canyon, and disasters such as the colossal forest fire of 1910. Therefore, Gary Eller and friends have tried to fill some of these musical gaps by writing event ballads.  In this program, Gary performs some of these ballads and talks about their colorful historical underpinnings.

Mar 28  7 PM--Idaho’s Ethnic Diversity with Arthur Hart                                     Boise Public Library Main–Hayes
Idaho’s premier historian discusses the many special contributions to Idaho made by such major groups as Native Americans, Chinese, Japanese, Irish, Germans, African Americans, Scandinavians, Mexicans, English, Scots and French.  Discover why they came, what work they found, and how their experiences were similar or different.
